I was fortunate to be invited to the castle whilst working at the Leipzig Messe in 1980.
I had previously only managed to get to the castle ramparts but had taken photos from the old moat and the town.
The invitation was made through the then British Ambassador to GDR who knew the Castle director.
We had an excellent meeting in the Gate Lodge, signed the official guestbook and received a commerative Meissen disk, which I still have!
Throughout the meeting the director kept pulling out from his desk drawer various items of escape equipment which were being found almost on a daily basis as they were renovating the castle.
The most prominent of which was a rope ladder made from bedsheets so thinly cut but remained sturdy, even after 40 odd years it could still hold the weight of a man.
We were not allowed into any of the buildings, as it was still being used as an asylum, but were able to wander around the enclosed courtyard.
Afterwards we went to a small house adjacent to the castle which housed many of the escape equipment which I now assume is back in the main building.
My only regret is that after the tour we went to the local tavern for lunch and there were Colditzbrau beermats on the tables and I never took one!
Nevertheless the beer was fine and the special of the day, liver and potatoes, was excellent, not only was it the special of the day but the only food available.
I still treasure that day and have made the Meissen disk a "willed" artefact to my son together with it's rather modern history.

Hallo, auf meiner täglichen Reise durch das Internet bin ich heute auf Deiner schönen Seite gelandet. Da steckt offenbar viel Arbeit drin. War Sommer 2005 einige Tage auf dem Campingplatz mit Rad. Umgebung sehr schön, auch die Ausstellung in Zschadraß erlebenswert. Hatte mich englischer Schlossführung angeschmiegt, dann nachgezahlt, am nächsten Tag Sonderführung bekommen. War sehr interessant. Wer am Vorabend in der Post war, kann sich vielleicht noch an mich erinnern.
Das Schloss war 2005 noch im Umbau, aber trotzdem schön. Leider musste ich letztes Jahr feststellen, dass man Naturstein mit Farbe übermalt hat und... dass diese teilweise abblättert. Glaube kaum, dass das im Mittelalter so ausgesehen hat. Schade...aber das Geld muss wohl weg... Man sagte mir, dass das Denkmalschutzamt oder so ähnlich von Sachsen das so vorschreibe. Die Beamten sollten sich wohl nicht so oft in Disneyworld rumtreiben.

Aber: wenig einladend wirkender Onlineshop & Downloadbereich (beides leer). Hoffe das ändert sich bald.
