@Fred: I don't know that Colditz got its name from "its cold", but it's a creative thought nonetheless. I would respectively like to see documentation for this idea...
My great grandfather Wilhelm Colditz came to America just prior to WWI, when the town had the same name that it does today. From my understanding, the town and castle has had the same name prior to Germany becoming a unified country (the first time, not the post WWII "unification" , though I'm no historian. I'm told that there was a duke somewhere up my family line that actually lived in the castle, though the family records were destroyed in the firebombing of Dresden, so I can't really be sure of that either. In any event, I do hope that the historical value of this castle is preserved, as I have not yet been there to see it. Unfortunately, the older history of the castle has been long since destroyed by Nazi occupation during WWII, so I have no hope of seeing the castle in its original glory.
Anyone that has information regarding the pre-WWII history of Colditz should email me, it will be greatly appreciated!

Trauer um Kenneth Lockwood
Hauptmann Kenneth Lockwood, der vier Jahre und fünf Monate als Kriegsgefangener auf Schloss Colditz inhaftiert war, verstarb am Montag, den 8. Oktober 2007, im Alter von 96 Jahren. Als einer der ersten britischen Offiziere kam er im November 1940 nach Colditz, wo er an vielen Fluchtaktivitäten beteiligt war. Als Verantwortlicher für die Verkaufsstelle beschaffte Hauptmann Lockwood für seine Kameraden, was diese für ihre Flucht benötigten. Sein eigener Ausbruch, den er gemeinsam mit anderen Gefangenen durch einen Tunnel unter der Verkaufsstelle unternahm, war nicht erfolgreich. Mit Hilfe von Gelee vervielfältigte Hauptmann Lockwood eingeschmuggelte Landkarten von Deutschland. Die Einnahme von Stadt und Schloss Colditz durch die Erste Amerikanische Armee am 16. April 1945 beendete die Gefangenschaft von Hauptmann Lockwood und anderen. Nach dem Krieg kam er oft nach Colditz zurück, um seine Erfahrungen an andere Menschen weiterzugeben. Im Jahr 2000 stand er für den Film "Escape from Colditz" vor der Kamera.
Captain Kenneth Lockwood, who spent four years and five month as a prisoner of war in Colditz Castle, died on Monday 8th October 2007 aged 96. He was one of the first British prisoners to arrive in November 1940 and played a key role in many escape attempts. As accounts manager of the prisoner’s shop he helped many fellow prisoners to find clothes, money or with hiding escape kits. He was one of several prisoners who attempted to escape through the tunnel beneath the shop but did not succeed. Captain Lockwood printed escape maps of Germany from jelly. On 16 April 1945 the American First Army took Colditz Castle and released Captain Lockwood and others. After the war, Captain Lockwood often came back to Colditz Castle to talk to people about his experiences during the war. He and other ex-prisoners returned to the castle for the cameras "Escape from Colditz" (2000).

Colditz got it's name from the prisoners there who were cold during a big winter snow storm. They kept saying: "it's cold, it's cold, it's cold". The german guards who did not speak english well thought the prisoners were saying: Colditz. The name stuck, and the rest is history.

I visited Colditz in September 2004 - the guide (I think it was Anne Marie can't remember her name exactly but she studied chemistry).
The tour was wonderful, very informative.
I am very happy that I visited. I have made a short film of the visit only recently and I put it on my website www.pbn.com.pl as well as you tube.

I visited the castle in May 2007. I would particularly like to thank Anne Marie, our tour guide, for a most informative and interesting tour.
Please maintain/preserve as much of the wartime history of the castle as possible. One cannot underestimate the depth of interest (particularly in Great Britain) in the history of Colditz Castle when it was Oflag 4C. It would have been much better if access to other important areas of the castle had been possible such as the Theatre (escape of Airey Neave and Tony Luteyn) and the attic where the glider was constructed. I would also suggest that access to the cellar and escape route used by Pat Reid would enhance any future experience. I also look forward to the time when access to the park is allowed.
I can thoroughly recommend the Hotel 'Zur Alten Stadtmauer' as a place to stay in Colditz. My thanks to Ralf Gorny and John Smith. They are excellent embassadors for Colditz Castle, the town and the surrounding area.

I've owned P.R. Reid's "Escape From Colditz" for more than forty years, and believe it the most exciting collection of tales surrounding World War II. Wife and I plan a 2008 trip to the castle. Here's the very best to all who share interest in the wartime story of the town; it's people, it's castle, it's former guards and prisoners.

Sehr geehrte Schloßdamen und -Herren,
wir sind auf der Rückfahrt an dem Schloß Colditz vorbeigekommen und da wir durch den Film uns schon immer mal dieses Schloß ansehen wollten, entschlossen wir uns spontan eine Besichtigung durchzuführen. Vorher waren wir in einem anderen Schloß, das zwar auf hatte (die Öffnungszeiten haben uns das verraten) aber die Damen und Herren hatten eine Dienstberatung und somit war für uns das Schloß geschlossen. Wir waren sehr enttäuscht, zumal wir nicht gerade um die Ecke wohnen.
Deshalb waren wir um so überraschter mit welch er Freundlichkeit wir begrüßt worden. Ganz vom Hocker hat uns geschmissen, da gerade eine Führung mit englischen Touristen lief, daß ich für mich ganz alleine eine Führung bekam, die zwar etwas kürzer aber ganz individuell auf mich zugeschnitten war. Ich habe viel über die Geschichte erfahren was ich so noch nicht kannte. Ich konnte viele Fragen stellen die alle zu meiner Zufriedenheit beantwortet wurde. Recht vielen Dank macht weiter so. Es war super toll.

Ich habe heute zum ersten Mal das Schloss besucht und wusste nicht, welche Bedeutung es insbesondere für unsere britischen Freunde hat. Das zweisprachige Pappschild, das sich im Eingangsbereich des ersten Hofes befindet, finde ich jetzt, nachdem ich mich informiert habe, etwas pietätlos. Warum muss unter diesem einfachen Pappschild eine Smirnoff-Reklame prangen? Hat Smirnoff die Übersetzung gesponsort?
Ansonsten ist Colditz-Castle gewaltig, egal, ob man von Rochlitz oder Grimma kommt. Hier in Halle aber so gut wie unbekannt. Ich glaube, Sie könnten einige Leute zum Besuch gewinnen!
